Houston Area School Districts Cancel Classes Amid Coronavirus Concerns

With the sudden outbreak of novel coronavirus cases in the Houston area, school districts and colleges cancel or postpone classes. 

Here is a list of Houston-are school closures due to the coronavirus.

  • Houston Independent School will resume classes for the rest of the week and close next week for Spring Break. Limited campus visitors and only screened visitors will be allowed on campus from March 23rd to April 3rd. After-school activities will be canceled during that time.
  • Houston ISD will be closed from March 13th to March 30th.  Classes will resume on Tuesday, March 31st.
  • All Montgomery ISD campuses and departments will close this Thursday and Friday ahead of spring break. Montgomery ISD after-school activities are canceled for Wednesday, and all sporting events and practices are canceled through Saturday.  
  • Tomball ISD delays Return from Spring Break until Monday, March 23rd.
  • Conroe ISD will be closed next week, March 16-20. Employees will receive further instructions from their supervisors.
  • Fort Bend ISD will suspend classes for at least two weeks, effective March 16th. During this period, FBISD will finalize online learning logistics and training for staff.
  • Galena Park ISD has canceled all activities/classes/events/competitions/practices for March 16th to March 22nd. The district will monitor the situation and provide updates when available. 
  • All Katy ISD has postponed return from Spring Break with campus events, field trips, student trips, and UIL practices/competitions are postponed effective through March 22nd.
  • CyFair ISD will close all schools and facilities from Friday, March 13th until Sunday, March 22th. All CFISD schools and facilities (including the Berry Center) will be closed.
  • Klein ISD closed Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20
  • Dickinson ISD will be closed March 16-20.
  • Sheldon ISD to remain closed Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20
  • Clear Creek Independent School District will be closed next week, March 16-20
  • Aldine ISD will remain closed following Spring Break through Monday, March 23.
  • Pearland ISD will close schools the week of March 16 – 20
  • Royal ISD campuses and facilities will be closed from March 16 to March 20, and all school activities are canceled.
  • Texas City ISD will be closed next week, March 16-20, 2020. All school activities/events are also canceled.
  • All Lamar CISD schools and facilities will be closed next week, March 16 through March 20. Effective immediately, all extracurricular activities and all travel are also canceled through March 20, 2020.
  • Magnolia ISD schools will be closed March 16-20.
  • SBISD will be temporarily suspending, postponing, or in some cases canceling all field trips, parent/community school events, and visitors and volunteers in SBISD facilities.
  • Willis ISD schools will be closed March 16-20.
  • St. Thomas Episcopal School closed until March 25.
  • The Joy School closed until March 25.
  • Needville ISD will be closed and all extracurricular activities are suspended the week of March 16-20.
  • All Waller ISD schools and offices will be closed March 16-20.
  • La Porte ISD is canceling school for the week of March 16. This also includes all extracurricular and co-curricular activities — to include all UIL events — beginning Friday, March 13.
  • University of Houston classes are canceled for next week. University will remain open, but the staff has the option to work remotely. Classes will resume online on March 23rd. Students are encouraged to stay home, but dorms are open for those returning, according to an official tweet by UH President Renu Khator.
  • Houston Baptist University will not hold any classes for the week of March 16-21. Classes will resume online starting March 23rd until further notice.
  • The University of St. Thomas has canceled classes for Thursday, March 12th, through Friday, March 13th, according to a statement from the university. Classes will resume online the week of March 23rd. 
  • The University of Houston-Downtown has suspended classes from March 16-22. All classes will be conducted online between March 23-April 4. On April 4th, officials will continue to asses whether to continue courses online.
  • Houston Community College will extend Spring Break by two days. HCC classes will not resume until Wednesday, March 25th. 
  • Prairie View A&M announced via Twitter that it would suspend classes until Monday, March 23rd, but that faculty and staff are still required to work.
  • Texas A&M has suspended classes until March 18th.
